Top Tips for Hiring a Mechanic
Auto repair shops come in all shapes and sizes: from small, mom-and-pop shops to larger nationally recognized chains. In addition to searching our directory, use these tips to help find a mechanic suitable to your needs.
Find out who services the big business fleets in your area. If the big companies trust that mechanic, there’s a good chance you will, too.
- Find a mechanic that will walk you through the problem step-by-step. Don’t rely on just their word; have them show you physical proof.
- Interview your mechanic. Ask how many years of experience they have, what types of vehicles they specialize in, and if they offer loaner cars while your car is in the shop.
- Find a trusted mechanic BEFORE you have car troubles. Use them for a small service like an oil change to build a good relationship.
- Go with your gut. If something seems off about the auto shop or the mechanic, take your car elsewhere.
Pump the Brakes on Bad Businesses
Having functioning brakes is arguably one of the most, if not the most important parts of your vehicle. Proper brakes can be the difference between life and death! If you’re looking for a mechanic to service your brakes, follow these guidelines:
- The cost of brake repairs can vary depending on whether your vehicle needs rotor repair or pad replacement. Make sure to ask for specifics when having your vehicle assessed.
- If the mechanic offers any “specials” or suggested repairs, ask if your vehicle’s well-being is at imminent risk first. If not, get a second opinion before any additional repairs.
- Have your mechanic show you the part of the brake that was removed. If it truly needs replacement, it will look rusted and worn out.
Taking Care of Your new Windshield
Unfortunately, the smallest pebble at the right velocity can force an entire glass replacement on your car. Here are some tips:
- Don’t drive for at least an hour after the new glass is installed. You may be eager to get back on the road after having your windshield replaced, but your first and foremost concern should be protecting your investment!
- Don’t wash your car for 24 hours. High pressure jets could potentially puncture the new seal.
- Avoid potholes and don’t slam your door for several days after the installation.
Extend the Life of Your Car
The more maintenance you do on a routine basis, the less likely you will have to take your car to a mechanic for major repairs. Visit a BBB Accredited mechanic to schedule your maintenance today.
- Change your oil. This one is a no-brainer. Changing the oil every 3,000 miles (or per manufacturer’s recommendation) is the easiest way to protect your engine from damaging sludge.
- Inspect your tires. Make it a habit to check the pressure at least once a month when you get gas. Rotate your tires every six months (you can couple it up with your oil change).
- Ask your mechanic about swapping out your air filter – and always have them show it to you. Air filters help keep your engine clean.
- Protect the outside. Keep your car covered or in a garage if possible. Many natural elements such as rain, snow, plants, and salt can damage the paint and body of the car.
- Drive safely. Aggressive driving puts stress on your entire car from constant jerking, accelerating, and braking.
