Fully bilingual Spanish-English speaking volunteers are needed on November 14th for call-in hotline

Volunteer to fight ID Theft on November 14

BBB Live - November 14 - NYC

"Robo de Identidad / Identity Theft"

Volunteers needed to handle

special call-in hotline for Spanish speakers

On November 14, 2012, from Noon to 9:00 pm, the Metro New York BBB Foundation will present its fifth annual "BBB Live" program, with generous support from Popular Community Bank and Univision 41.  The 2012 program will inform consumers about identity theft in general, with a special focus on tax-related identity theft. We will provide consumer tips about how to avoid identity theft - especially newer types of this common crime - and what to do if you become a victim, through a special call-in hotline for Spanish speakers promoted on television by Univision.

Fully bilingual Spanish-English speaking volunteers are needed to answer calls from the public on November 14th.  Volunteers will help direct callers from the Tri-State area to legitimate sources of financial counseling, government assistance, legal help, or other related professional help (instead of scamsters).  Calls will be conducted in Spanish.  We will also send printed information by mail to callers who are willing to provide us with their addresses.  We will train call handlers briefly, and provide a briefing guide in English and Spanish.  Training will be in English.  Call handling and training will be done at the BBB's Manhattan offices, located at 30 East 33rd Street, 12th Floor, near Park Avenue South.

We are seeking at least 25 fluent Spanish speakers per shift, in three shifts of 4 hours each, including training.  Volunteers need to be able to handle callers in a professional way, and be willing to follow BBB instructions about what can and cannot be said to callers.  Professionals who understand financial literacy and tax issues, legal professionals and law students, or professionals who have experience with identity theft victims would be especially valuable in helping callers recognize potential identity theft situations, although we will not be providing financial or legal advice directly through the hotline.

We ask that volunteers commit to participating in at least one of the three shifts:

1.      Train at 12 noon,  call answering from 1 PM to 4 PM

2.      Train at 3 PM, call answering from 4 PM to 7 PM

3.      Train at 5 PM, call answering from 6 PM to 9 PM

Volunteers for the third shift are especially needed, as the largest number of calls are typically received in that time period.

Please contact Heather Layland at 212-358-2829 or e-mail hlayland@newyork.bbb.org to get additional details or to register as a volunteer or a group of volunteers.  We ask that volunteers let us know in advance which shift(s) they are choosing, so that we can assure full staffing of phone banks throughout the call-in day.  Feel free to share this message with others who may be interested in participating.

Thank you!
