Memorial Day Scams Target the Military, Their Families, and Supporters

Memorial Day is a time to honor those who serve and have served in our country’s military. Unfortunately, it has also become an opportunity for scammers to target those same people we are honoring, especially elderly veterans. BBB urges consumers and donors to be on the lookout for deals that seem too good to be true, and for disreputable charities. “The unique lifestyle of our service members makes them prime targets for scammers,” notes Brenda Linnington, Director of BBB Military Line.

If you are deployed away from your usual duty station and do not expect to seek new credit while you are deployed, consider placing an “active duty alert” on your credit report. An active duty alert requires creditors to take steps to verify your identity before granting credit in your name.
