Phyllis Spaeth is the Associate Director of the Children's Advertising Review Unit of the CBBB. She came to CARU after serving for ten years as head of the NYS Attorney General's Hazardous Products Task Force, where she was responsible for the recall and redesign of hazardous consumer products, including children's toys and other products intended for use by children. In addition, her work resulted in child-resistant closures for mouthwash containing alcohol and for vitamins and other iron-containing supplements. Ms. Spaeth also worked with the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Attorney General's office on issues involving the advertising and sale of pesticides. Over the course of her career at the Attorney General's office, Ms. Spaeth worked closely with the Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and Attorneys General nationwide.
A graduate of CCNY and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Ms. Spaeth began her legal career as a litigator, serving as a criminal defense attorney for the Legal Aid Society. During her time at Legal Aid, Ms. Spaeth conducted numerous jury trials.
